In the past, many international students came to the United States looking to study at a handful of well-known, prestigious universities and colleges throughout the nation. As the number of international students continues to grow and the price tag among these elite schools is also increasing, many international students are considering other alternatives.

Tech schools, also known as vocational schools, are designed to train students on specific skills such as computer technology or health care. Instead of a traditional University, the emphasis of a tech school is to prepare students for jobs by giving students skills directly related to their employment. Many international students are turning to technical schools to get their US education – and at a greatly reduced price!

Why, you might ask? First of all, many of these tech schools offer more affordable tuition and most degree programs can be completed quicker than a traditional college. With a growing demand for international students, tech schools are combining these offerings with scholarships to further reduce the price for students. Let’s look at Tennessee Tech who in one year grew from 53 (in Spring 2011) to 188 (in Spring 2012) international students. According to Amy Miller, Tennessee Tech study abroad coordinator, one reason for this increase is that students are getting different types of scholarships, including funding from their home country’s government.

And financing isn’t just the end of it; tech schools aren’t stopping there either. In addition to their degree program, tech schools are now introducing English language centers to help students improve English fluency before beginning their coursework. Texas Tech, for example, plans to open an ELS Language Center this June to help expand their reach globally. While there are no scholarships for ELS students at Texas Tech, they are looking into the possibility of extending scholarships to the English learning process as well.

If anyone ever thought that tuition fees do not effect enrollment, a new study recently released showed otherwise. www.YourNextLeap.com conducted a survey that showed that Indian students are choosing more affordable schools – many of which are public universities.

Tuition costs are on the rise in the United States, especially as the US government continues to reduce federal funding. As tuition increases, and the Indian Rupee depreciates against the US dollar, more Indian students are balancing cost and their preference for top universities. As students balance these two important decisions, many students are applying to schools that offer a good balance of both.

According to this survey of 1,000 students, the findings indicated that 43% of Indian students preferred public universities in 2011-2012 which increased to 62% for the upcoming semester. This same study found that cost is a major consideration for international students where students applied to universities with the following cost structure:

Tuition Fee Annually

Percent of Indian Student Applicants

Below ,000

17%

,000 – ,000

40%

,000 – ,000

16%

,000 – ,000

27%

To compare costs, according to College Board a public four-year college charges on average ,526 for tuition and fees for out-of-state students annually whereas a private nonprofit four-year college charges ,500 each year.

This comes as an important indicator for schools looking to attract and grow their international student body. In 2011, India was the second largest sending country of international students after China, sending 103,895 students to the United States (14% of the total international student body).

If you’re planning on traveling internationally, your U.S.pass port renewal is important. Check the date on the data page and if it’s about to expire, it’s time to renew. The form you need can be found online and printed and you can fill it out by hand. Or, fill it out on your computer and it will be ready to print and send. If you prefer to bring it in person, it’s easy to find the phone number for your local agency and call for an appointment.

Application

The application will be different based on whether you are renewing, applying for your first passport or replacing one that has been lost or stolen. It’s also different if you have changed your name. However, all the forms you need are easy to find online.

Identification

One requirement is that you have two pieces of ID. The first verifies your identity and it can be your driver’s license or old passport, a certificate of naturalization, or government identification. The second type of ID is proof of U. S. Citizenship, which can be your birth certificate, government or military ID. You’ll also need a copy of each type of identification that you mail or bring in.

Photos

The final requirement is two identical color photos of yourself. Your face must show clearly and the background has to be white or off-white. When your application documents are in order, you then pay the fee, which ranges between $100 and $140.

Passport Cards

Another option is to buy a passport card. It has a size and appearance similar to that of a driver’s license and can be used for travel to Canada, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and Mexico. It is smaller and easier to carry and it costs less but it cannot be used for international air travel. The fees vary based on whether it is for adults or children but the range is only $30 to $55.

Expediting

If an urgent need for international travel has arisen, it is possible to renew quickly. There will be an extra fee of $60 and you will also be charged for two-day shipping. It’s a good idea to bring your application in person but if mailing is the method you must use, two-day service is recommended. If you do mail it, write “expedite” on the envelope and sign up for a way to track the mail.

Online Help

There are answers on the Net about what to do if you are traveling officially, how to get proof of citizenship and any other questions you may have. It could be that you want to know about how many visa pages you need or how to get a lost pasport replacement. All the instructions for how to fill out the applications are also provided online.

Black marlin have a place in Black Marlin fishing folklore all of their own, as do blue marlin, and they have both been immortalized by writers like Ernest Hemmingway and Zane Grey. Almost exclusively existing in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of both the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the black marlin is a highly migratory, pelagic species of fish that are most commonly found in deep waters, though they rarely swim deeper than a hundred feet, near bottom structures such as continental shelves and reefs. The black marlin’s immense size and strength make it a favored target among many big-game fishermen.

Black Marlins vs. Blue Marlins

Black and blue marlins are commonly mistaken for one another. Usually this happens when a fish is caught weighing less than 100 pounds. There are a few noticeable differences between blue and black marlins, however, that can be easily detected. One of the main differing characteristics of black and blue marlins is that a black marlin has a pectoral fin that, when pressed on, will not fold over. Another character trait difference is that the bill of a black marlin tends to be much shorter and heavier than a blue marlin. The black marlin is also the only marlin that has non-retractable fins on its body.

Appearance

In terms of color, the black marlin possesses a slate hue that turns into a silver belly. When excited, the black marlin has been known to show off light blue stripes as well. Some researchers have noted that a few black marlins obtain a silvery haze over their bodies. This caused some in the pacific to mistakenly label them “silver marlins”. An enormous fish when mature, black marlins can reach lengths of up to 15 feet and weigh in at well over 1000 pounds. Most prize-winning black marlin that are caught a female, however, as it is extremely rare for a male black marlin to weigh more than 300 pounds. A black marlin’s diet consists of dolphin, squid, octopuses, swordfish, and tuna. It has been proven through stomach analysis that these fish use their long, sharp bills to conquer and eat their prey.

Trolling for Black Marlin

Once on the line, a black marlin can fight for hours, wearing heavily on the anglers who are fortunate enough to hook one. Once hooked, black marlin tend to swim deeply, without jumping, but early in the battle some have been known to make spectacular jumps from the sea. A common method to lure a black marlin in is to troll brightly colored lures or rigged baitfish behind vessels. Live bait has also proven effective. It’s fun to go Blue Marlin fishing.
